With A Short History of Irish Literature, Rudiger Imhof adds another literary history to the growing body of such works in the past few years. While several of these recent works limit their scope to a particular period or genre, Imhof is more ambitious and proceeds to give a survey of the whole of Ireland's literature in English. In the title, Imhof qualifies this scope somewhat with the adjective 'short', explaining in the introduction that this 'inevitably requires of us that we drop a number of names from the canon of Irish literature in English in order to prevent this survey from lapsing into mere namedropping' (p.6). Imhof's Short History is indeed a small and handy volume, amounting to no more than 176 pages. It is subdivided in neat little sections with helpful captions for each paragraph. All the names are in capital letters and book titles always come with their date of publication. Though the book can boast of no index--this is something of a lack--it comes with an extensive and highly useful bibliography of relevant works, subdivided according to type and literary genre. Add to that the moderate price and it becomes clear that the book is aimed first and foremost at the student of Irish literature, both in Ireland and abroad. All things considered, A Short History of Irish Literature fulfils this function admirably as it gives a lucid and concise summary introduction to Irish literature.
